Beka Cooper - Bk. 1
Terrier
by Tamora Pierce
Set 200 years before the Alanna/Song of the Lioness series. About George's relative. It is not essential to read them first, but may help give you a better understanding (see first post).
Beka wants to be part of the Provost's Guard. She has a love and a passion for the law, and being one of the Guard (or the Dogs as dubbed) is an opportunity to help people and honor the law.
Being shy by nature though is a hurdle she will have to overcome if she wants to succeed. But with the right mentors (Tunstall & Goodwin), and an exceptional cat friend called Pounce (who can let people understand his speech when pleases him), she will make her mark. Determination and keen wits will get her far.
While in training, it is good to practice your observation skills and learn report writing, so this journal is her practice.
Enjoy the your time in the roughest, part of town... the Lower City and slums.
I will admit that this is not my number one Tamora Pierce series, but Beka is a wonderful character for our subject. Determination helps her stick to her goals and prove that she is worthy of being a 'Dog'.
Fascinating look at an earlier Tortall and the Lower City. Refreshing change from the nobility which have been the main focus in this world so far.
